Social and economic relations produce space. To think of the built environment as space rather than a collection of objects is useful because its parts become conjoined within a system, a kind of ecology. Through this ecology we begin to understand the causal relationships between economy, society, and culture on the one hand, and the urban environment on the other.- Setha M. Low
