Once again I visited another weekly dose, this one from over five years ago. Stabile Hall by Pasanella+Klein, Stolzman+Berg Architects is also the first of three buildings to be featured here on Pratt Institute's Brooklyn campus.
Approaching this building that sits in the NW corner of Pratt's campus, one sees the elevation above. Three brick-clad wings extend towards the parking lot, with translucent glazing behind the brick. The juxtaposition of materials and the asymmetrical facade treatment of the symmetrical plan make for a subdued contemporary expression with high visibility.
Moving around the building, we are confronted with a different type of elevation, the one above. The in-and-out of the plan gives way to a solid wall with a 3-story metal piece above a 2-story brick base. The asymmetry of the other side also gives way to a somewhat regular pattern of relatively traditional windows. This facade is not nearly as successful as the "rear" one, though it is saved by the entry pavilion, below.
Located at the south end of the dormitory, the entry gives the project an overall asymmetry, perhaps stemming from the inclusion of studio spaces, galleries, and common areas. These spaces must be removed from the cookie-cutter dorm rooms, and a location off to the side seems appropriate. The entry also aligns with a walkway that links it too the main quad and the rest of the campus.
Directions:
The school can be reached by the 4, 5 to Fulton Street; the A,C to Hoyt-Schermerhorn; the G to Clinton-Washington. The building is on the corner of Classon and Willoughby Avenues.
